Nortel Applicaiton Switch will be sold
Posted On Feb 22, 2009 at at 1:25 AM by DophiNortel Application Switch (aka Alteon) was purchased from Alteon WebSystems in 2000. Nine years had passed but Alteon application switch never improved the functionality while other competitors were developing layer 4 to 7 products. During the bankruptcy processing, Nortel has announced that it will sell off Aleton to Radware, but keep selling under an OEM agreement.
I heard this kind rumor last year but could believe Nortel would sell this product to others, because this is the only one Nortel enterprise data communication product with advantage in the market (Except Alteon, what else can Nortel sell and get a buyer? LoL). After the Chapter 11 event, Nortel speeds up the restructuring and plans to sell some product lines. Well, because of the advantage, Radware would like to buy not only the products but also intellectual property, some inventory and service contracts. Eventually, Radware will hire some Nortel employees to continue the development of this technology. The product lines that will be sold include Nortel Application Accelerators 510 and 610; Nortel Application Switches 2208E, 2216E, 2424E SSL, 2424E, 3408E; and the Virtual Services Switch 5000 (The Application Accelerators are the worst applicaiton accelerating appliance I have seen in the market and Virtual Service Switch 5000 is never officially announced).
Radware promises any support service for customers will be continued and stronger despite Nortel’s bankruptcy proceedings. This is a chance for Alteon’s survival but I think that Radware might merge VSS 5000 with AppDeiector and NAA 510 with AppXcel due to the similarity of them. About Radware’s ability for development and marketing, I have no comment so far.
